Camera comparison: iPhone 14 Pro vs. iPhone 13 Pro

For the first time ever, the Apple iPhone 14 Pro uses a 48-MP sensor and promises improved colors from the macro lens compared to its predecessor. Luckily, we have an iPhone 13 Pro on hand to compare the two smartphones.

A 48-MP sensor is a premiere for the Apple iPhone 14 Pro’s main camera. What is new within the Apple universe, has been established in the Android sector since 2018. Of course, the latest iPhone uses a more modern piece of technology than the smartphones four years ago. Due to the large pixel count, Apple now too uses pixel binning, resulting in 12-MP pictures. The extra pixels are not just used under low-light conditions, however, and also serve as the basis for a 2x digital zoom that is supposed to be indistinguishable from an optical zoom. Meanwhile, the optical image stabilization with second-generation sensor shifting promises blur-free capturing.

In a direct comparison with the iPhone 13 Pro, which exclusively features 12-MP sensors, we already observe small improvements in the quality of daylight shots. Bright spots are almost entirely eliminated, resulting in more evenly illuminated pictures. The ultra-wide shots are very similar, although the iPhone 14 Pro’s results also seem to offer a slightly higher degree of sharpness.

Night shots taken with the main camera of the iPhone 13 Pro appear cooler and the sharpness is lower compared to the iPhone 14 Pro. Using the macro mode option of the ultra-wide lens reveals further advantages of the newer smartphone. Colors now appear significantly more natural. While the banana appears slightly green on the 13 Pro, it is definitely yellow on the 14 Pro. That being said, the color balance is still not on par with that of the main camera.
